A Pair of Kneeling Angels
(703-74)

The kneeling angels would have flanked a sacred object, likely a saint's reliquary or an image of the Madonna and Child Jesus. They are well-balanced, angular, classically draped figures, an offshoot of the Baroque Classicism then wending its way northward from Rome. The medium suggests contact with Flemish or French woodcarvers.

Italy, 18th century.
